How Couples Counselling Can Help

Relationships can be one of the most important parts of our lives, but they can also be one of the places where we feel most hurt, misunderstood or stuck. Many couples come to counselling because they keep having the same argument, feel distant from one another, struggle to communicate, or feel as though they have lost the closeness they once had.

As a certified couples counsellor, I work with couples using the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. This model is a compassionate and practical way of understanding relationships. Rather than seeing couples as broken, it views many relationship difficulties as part of normal growth and development. Couples can get stuck at different stages, especially when there is conflict, stress, resentment, life changes or emotional disconnection.

One of the reasons I find this model so effective is that it does not simply focus on ‘who is right’ or ‘who is wrong’. Instead, it helps each partner understand their own part in the relationship pattern. Often couples arrive feeling that the problem is mainly the other person. This is very understandable, especially when there has been hurt or frustration. However, lasting change usually begins when both partners can start to look at what they each do, how they respond, and what they may need to learn in order to create a healthier relationship.

The Developmental Model

The Developmental Model helps couples move away from blame and towards curiosity. It supports each person to understand themselves more clearly, express their needs more honestly, and listen to their partner without immediately defending, shutting down or attacking. This can be especially powerful for couples who feel caught in repeated cycles of criticism, withdrawal, conflict avoidance, emotional reactivity or misunderstanding.

A key part of this work is differentiation. This means learning how to stay connected to your partner whilst still being your own separate person. In healthy relationships, both people need space to have their own thoughts, feelings, needs, opinions and differences. Many couples struggle not because they do not love each other, but because difference starts to feel threatening. One person may push harder to be heard, while the other may withdraw, appease or shut down. Over time, these patterns can leave both people feeling lonely, defensive or unseen.

In couples counselling, I help you slow these patterns down so you can begin to understand what is really happening underneath. The work is not about forcing quick solutions or deciding who is to blame. It is about changing the way you talk, listen and respond to one another, so that solutions become easier to find together.

I also bring a trauma-informed and nervous-system-informed approach to my couples work. When couples are triggered, they are often not communicating from their calm, thoughtful part of the brain. They may move into fight, flight, freeze, appeasing or shutting down. This is why simply telling couples to ‘communicate better’ is often not enough. Couples need tools to regulate, pause, self-soothe and come back into a place where they can think clearly and hear one another.

In sessions, we may explore communication patterns, emotional triggers, conflict styles, unmet needs, intimacy, trust, resentment, boundaries and the ways each partner protects themselves when they feel hurt or unsafe. I may also use structured exercises to help you speak and listen in a different way, so that conversations feel less blaming and more constructive.

What couples counselling can support with

Couples counselling can help you to:

Understand the negative patterns you keep getting caught in
Communicate with more honesty and less defensiveness
Listen to each other with more curiosity and empathy
Manage conflict without escalating or shutting down
Recognise your own triggers and responses
Rebuild emotional closeness and trust
Understand each other as separate individuals
Create healthier ways of dealing with difference
Work as a team rather than opponents
Find practical ways forward together

The aim is not to create a perfect relationship where you never disagree. Healthy couples do have differences, frustrations and difficult conversations. The difference is that they learn how to repair, how to stay respectful, and how to keep turning towards each other rather than becoming trapped in the same painful cycle.

Couples counselling can be helpful whether you are feeling very stuck, going through a difficult life transition, recovering from a rupture, or simply wanting to understand each other better. It offers a space where both partners can feel heard, supported and gently challenged.

My role is to help you both look at the relationship with honesty and compassion, while also supporting each of you to take responsibility for your own growth. When couples can move from blame to understanding, and from reactivity to curiosity, new possibilities often begin to open up.
